The round trip of 1.8 miles makes this hike sound easy, but while there are far worse in the Adirondacks, I promise you will still have to work for this. The first 0.3 miles is relatively flat, but during the last 0.6 miles you will gain about 834′ of elevation. That is a tough mileage/elevation gain ratio to maintain, but the distance is short; so take breaks and be grateful that you are almost there.
The trail for me was full of snow, but I am told you can expect a rocky hike during the summer.
The tower is in great shape and it felt safe to climb, but you can also get some great views of the High Peaks from the cliffs nearby. In the picture below I numbered the mountains to help you locate them when you are at the vista (a larger picture of this can be found on the Saint Regis Tower page). 1. Whiteface and Esther, 2. Giant Mountain and RPR, to the right of number 2 is Big Slide and then the Lower Great Range comes into the picture with the Wolf Jaws and #3-Gothics. next comes 4-Basin, 5– Marcy, 6-Algonquin, 7-Seward.
From the tower you get a better look at the eastern horizon, most prominent is Debar mountain.
