The entire trail from the lower parking lot to the upper parking lot is very well maintained; The only obstacles being steps and the occasional patch of roots. The very beginning of the trail is mainly woods. After about 1.5 miles the path takes you closer to the water, the trees open up and the shale walls climb high; this is a subtle preview of what is ahead.

At the two mile mark we came to an intersection; This is where the two ends of the Upper Gorge Loop and the Lower Gorge Trail meet. From here the most direct route to the big falls was to go clockwise (straight). All of the action seems to happen in the half mile between the intersection and the upper parking area. The 115 ft Lucifer falls empties into a shale amphitheater, Water flows through canals and over rocks. bridges and walkways are carved into the massive gorge to ensure that you get as close as possible to these incredible rock formations.

IMG_4386After returning to the lower parking lot, be sure to check out the awesome waterfall swimming area. The quick description: this is a dammed stream with a waterfall flowing into it. Their is an area roped off for younger kids and their is a 12′ deep section near the falls where you can jump off a diving board. Their is a lifeguard but kids in floats are not allowed in the deep end. Their is no extra charge to swim and their is a changing and grilling area right near the water. On a hot muggy summer day this place is perfect!

Be sure to check out nearby Watkins Glen and Taugahonnock Falls for more incredible waterfalls and gorges. The Finger Lakes are awesome.
